Biarritz is often referred to as a leading destination for leisure and water sports in southwest France. The spot offers six kilometers of waterfront and seven different beaches.

Located on the Atlantic coast near the Spanish border in Biarritz, Grande Plage (or the Grand Beach) is the most popular and one of the most beautiful in town.

Biarritz Beach: The Basics

The Grande Plage of Biarritz covers over 450m of fine sands and stands as the perfect surfing destination. On the promenade that extends along the beach, you can find exquisite seafood restaurants, a swimming pool, a casino, seawater therapy centers, and stunning Atlantic Ocean views.

Biarritz is the capital of seawater therapy, also known among the locals as thalassotherapy. It’s a perfect place to relax with seawater massages, mud baths, seaweed wraps, or simply taking a long swim in the salty waters. Visitors can safely leave their children in kid’s clubs and enjoy the myriad watersports.

A Hint of History

The beach is also known as Empress beach due to its royal background: back in the days, Napoleon III married princess Eugénie and built a summer residence for her on the beach. In 1893, the building was turned into what we know today as the Hôtel de Palais, where you canstill see some of theoriginal furnishing and miraculous views.

Biarritz was the favorite destination of the empress, and she loved spending her summers here. Many European royalties and cinema stars from both sides of the ocean also loved to come to Biarritz.

Surfer’s Paradise

Biarritz and its Grande Plage are considered the birthplace of surfing in Europe. In September 1956, screenwriter Peter Viertel came to the town to film his movie “The Sun Also Rises”, based on Hemingway’s novel. Film producer Richard Zanuck came with Viertel, and thus the story started. Zanuck was a passionate surfer and found out that Biarritz is a perfect surfing place.

On September 16, 1959, Zanuck and many other professional surfers founded the first surf club in Europe. It was called the “Waikiki Surf Club.” Since then, the Basque Coast and Biarritz town have hosted a number of surf competitions and contests. The star is the Roxy Pro Surf Competition that gathers surf fans from around the world every year.

Biarritz Grande Plage is a great place not only for professional surfers but also for newbies. Here you can find many surf schools and make the first steps in your career as a surfer!
