Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica Metropolitana de Santa María de Burgos, or shortly the Burgos Cathedral, is a Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is named a UNESCO World Heritage Site with outstanding universal value for its extraordinary assemblage of Gothic art artifacts – starting from the architecture itself and going through the numerous paintings, choir stalls, tombs, and stained-glass windows.

The cathedral can be found in the Spanish city of Burgos, in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León – about 250km away from Madrid. Burgos is a part of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, as well as a prominent tourist destination that is easily reachable by car, train, or bus.

History of the Burgos Cathedral

The Burgos Cathedral was constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries. Nowadays, it exhibits an in-depth illustration of the development of the Gothic style throughout that period, combined with ornamental details from the Renaissance and Baroque.

Both the interior and the exterior of the Burgos Cathedral have a vibrant architectural, sculptural and graphic richness. Its façade, 84-meter towers, Royal Door, Gothic-Plateresque dome, and main altarpiece are just a tiny part of the spectacular pieces of art, accessible for the visitors.

Practical information about visiting the Burgos Cathedral

The cathedral is open for visitors all-year-round, yet it has different opening hours through the summer and winter seasons.

In the summertime (March 19 to October 31), visitors are welcomed from 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM, and entrance is free for everyone on Tuesday afternoons – from 4:30 PM  to 6:30 PM.

In the wintertime (November 1 to March 18), visitors are welcomed from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, while the entrance is free for everyone on Tuesday afternoons – from 4:30 PM  to 6:00 PM.

Visitors are welcome to enroll in the special guided tours that provide more comprehensive information about the place itself, as well as its cultural and historical context. The Burgos Cathedral has an in-house museum that preserves its most essential pieces of art and is accessible at all times.

The Cathedral is also a fully functional religious temple, so believers can attend masses, or freely enter the area reserved for worship, prayers, and sacraments.
