Cascade des Tufs – the many faces of nature, all of which beautiful

Cascade des Tufs, also referred to as Cascade Baume les Messieurs, is another small, yet very unusual and scenic waterfall, placed in the heart of the magnificent Jura Mountains.

The fall itself is not very high – it rises only about 12 meters above the ground – yet it provides stunning scenery through all seasons, thanks to its amazing cascades, its living moss, and the unique rock formations around it. Here is your pocket guide to exploring the area and enjoying its unparalleled vitality.

Location and getting there

Cascade des Tufs is located in the broader region of Franche Comte/Jura, France. The waterfall can be found near the bottom of the blind valley of Baume les Messieurs. The area is popular among locals and international tourists and is therefore well suited for welcoming visitors.

All you need to do (in case you’re not using a GPS device) is follow the “Grottes” signs until you reach Restaurant des Grottes, where you can park your vehicle.

The path from the restaurant and parking lot to the waterfall is rather short and accessible. It is very child-friendly and available for people with reduced mobility. Visiting the area is free of charge and possible all-year-round.

When to go and what to expect

Cascade des Tufs provides a different kind of experience through every season, and we bet that you’d enjoy them all equally.

Here is where waters of the underground river Dard burst over a beautiful chalkstone, covered in mosses and greens. This assemblage of natural elements provides an ever-changing pattern of colors and shapes, highly dependent on the current climate conditions. Here is what to expect in different parts of the year:

  • During spring, Cascade des Tufs will make an impression with the higher amounts of water, making it look powerful and majestic. This is when the moss around the falls is greener, creating an impressive overall picture worth witnessing.

  • In summer, you will get the most precise view over the mosses themselves, since the waters won’t be getting much in your way.

  • When autumn hits, the pattern of colors around the waterfall will take your breath away, making you feel like a part of an unreal fairytale landscape.

  • During the winter months, the waterfall often freezes, creating state-of-the-art icy formations that also look like something completely out of this world.

Need a piece of advice? You better make sure to visit Cascade des Tufs in every season, because it will always be worth it.
