History of Castello di Miramare

The Miramare Castle was constructed between 1856 and 1860 by architect Karl Juncker. It was then intended to serve as an official residence of the Austrian Archduke Maximilian, the future emperor of Mexico, and his wife Charlotte of Belgium.

After the tragic death of Emperor Maximilian I, The Miramare Castle was utilized as the Austro-Hungarian imperial family’s residence during their occasional visits to Trieste.

After WWI, the castle changed purposes several times: it was owned by the Italian government, used as a residence of the Viceroy of Ethiopia, turned into a German school for officers, employed by the command of the New Zealand units, and used as the headquarters of an American garrison.

Finally, in 1955, after a large-scale agenda of restoring the authentic looks of the interior and the park of Miramare, the palace was transformed into a museum and opened its doors for the general public.
