The best place you didn’t know you shall visit one day

Today we take off to yet another off-beat gem, located in the Chaumont commune of France.

The Chaumont Viaduct is undoubtedly a local celebrity, and in the following paragraphs, we will help you understand why exactly it deserves your consideration as a well-known adventure lover.

A brief history

The Chaumont Viaduct is a railroad bridge that crosses the Suize River and is a part of the Paris-Basel railroad line.

The beginning of its construction began back in 1855 and was completely finished as soon as 1856. A spectacular three-story, semi-circular arch bridge was erected in just one year, which is both fully functional and amazingly beautiful. To make this possible, an average of 2,500 workers were engaged in the viaduct construction, who used to work day and night.

In 1944, the German troops destroyed four of the viaduct piers, and the viaduct was temporarily out of use. Anyway, the dynamited parts of it were later rebuilt in stone-covered concrete and are still standing strong.

Nowadays, the Chaumont Viaduct is still in use: you can observe it from a distance or experience it directly by riding the train above the river, overlooking Chaumont’s scenery.

Construction details

The Chaumont Viaduct is indeed a remarkable construction to observe both in terms of architecture and aesthetics.

The railway bridge is exactly 654 meters long. It rises 52 meters above the valley floor and the water surface. The construction involves over 60 000 m³ of stonework, while its piers and arches are entirely masonry work.

What’s pretty unique about the bridge are its 50 triple-tiered arches, the levels of which reach between 3 and 15 meters of height. To make the view even more striking, the Chaumont Viaduct is illuminated every evening at nightfall.

Sounds like a distinguished postcard material, does it not? To experience the place’s actual vividness, you can enjoy our HD video and start packing immediately afterward.

Planning your visit to The Chaumont Viaduct

The massive railway bridge is more or less dominating the view around the Chaumont commune, so you will be free to enjoy it from plenty of different viewpoints around town.

Another way to cherish the moment is to plan a railway trip crossing the city by taking a preferred ride from the Paris-Basel railroad line.

Whichever alternative you choose to experience, don’t forget to grab your camera and get ready to have your breath taken away!
