The hidden gem of Asturias

The principality of Asturias in Northern Spain hosts numerous spectacular natural treasures, yet Cuevas del Mar Beach certainly deserves an honorable mention.

The literal translation of “Cuevas del Mar” is “the caves of the sea,” and you can already start feeling the epicness. In fact, this is a rather tiny beach, with no more than 300 meters of length – but the size had never been the point, had it? The most spectacular detail about Cuevas del Mar is the unusual frame of rocky formations surrounding the beach that creates a stunning landscape, full of numerous rock arches and sea caves. Combined with the soft and milky-white sands, it unfolds a state-of-the-art scenery, that can serve as a perfect background for some of your most delightful memories of Spain.

How can you get there?

Cuevas del Mar Beach is not a mainstream destination, but rather a secret hidden gem that most of the tourists stumble upon by accident. Anyway, you can’t solely rely on fate to get you to amazing places, so we are stepping in to help.

Cuevas del Mar Beach is reachable both by car and by foot, starting from the Nueva de Llanes village located nearby. You can follow the E-9 path that is widely recognized for its fantastic views, uncovering a considerable part of Asturias and its beaches. Of course, other roads also lead to the Cuevas del Mar – you can choose to approach it from Picones by following a mountain-view path that will guide you straight to the shore. If you feel hesitant and you are worried about getting lost, here is a precious hint – there is a cool mobile app, called ASTURPLAYA, that will safely guide you to any given Asturian beach.

If you decide to arrive there by car, keep in mind that the parking lot near the beach is rather miniature and you might have trouble parking your vehicle, especially if you are coming around for the weekend.

Things to enjoy in the area

Cuevas del Mar Beach offers the most astonishing source of enjoyment – nature. The showers, the beach bar, and occasional lifeguards are the only traces of civilization around, so you better find a more genuine way to entertain yourself. We suggest swimming, sunbathing, fishing, rock climbing, or just chilling out with a good book and having the time of your life.
