The Dune of Pilat is the tallest sand dune in Europe –  an unusual and impressive sightseeing location that continuously draws visitors from all over the world. The marvelous natural formation with a height of 106.60 m above sea level measures approximately 2.7 km long and 500 m wide.

The dune is still moving towards the land and keeps “devouring” between one and five meters of land every year, according to scientists. The beauty and the off-beat spirit of the place constitute an ever-expanding interest among tourists – and if you’re still not one of them, it’s about time to reconsider your travel plans.

When to visit, what to consider, and how to enjoy your trip to the fullest? Let us tell you all the details.

Location and getting there

The Dune of Pilat is situated 60 km away from Bordeaux, in La Teste-de-Buch, Arcachon Bay area, France, and is  part of the Landes de Gascogne Natural Park.

You can reach the location by car (from Bayonne, Bordeaux to the A660 Arcachon road), by bus from Arcachon, or by using the excellent cycle network along the dune and towards La Teste de Buch or Pyla sur Mer.

There is a spacious parking lot about 400 m away from the dune, which you will only need to pay for if you park your vehicle between 2 AM and 5 AM.

Planning your visit

When making plans for your visit, there are a few basics to consider in order to make the most out of your trip:

  • The Dune of Pilat is a natural phenomenon accessible for the general public for free, all-year-round.
  • In the summer season, the place gets quite crowded, so you might consider May or September to be the optimal times to visit.
  • If you want to stay longer, you can book a hotel in Arcachon or La Teste de Buch, stay in one of the five mobile-home campsites right on the spot, or book a night at the luxury hotel of the Dune.
  • In the summer season, you can find a few pleasurable snack bars between the parking lot and the dune – you can grab a meal, have a coffee, and take a break before you go on exploring.

Ready to go? Grab your camera, set up your mind, and enjoy a magnificent 360° view over the pines, the sandbank, and the beauty of it all.
