Where nature blends with culture

Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña, which literally translates as Hermitage of the Virgin of the Rock, is an extraordinary catholic monastery carved into a massive natural rock formation many centuries ago. It is undoubtedly one of the most captivating and enigmatic holy sites to visit in Spain, especially if you are up to a bit of adventure.

It reaches off the beaten track, above and beyond the world – where culture softly bends into nature, where past and present intertwine, where the Earth gently caresses the sky. This is, by all means, not a place you can afford to visit without any prior preparation, so here is everything you have to consider in a nutshell.

Location and getting there

Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña is a located on the Jaca mountain hills above the town of Aniés, in the La Sotonera Municipality of Spain.

The Hermitage is accessible only by foot, and you should prepare for a hike that lasts between an hour and an hour and a half, depending on your temp and physical preparation. There is a black road available for 4×4 vehicles, yet it will, sadly, strip the journey of its essential charm.

The hike will take you through forests, caves, and mountain paths that are thrilling enough to send shivers down your spine but also impressive enough to make it all worth it.

The Hermitage is open for visitors on weekends and public holidays from 10:30 to 14:30 and has a 2,50 € entry ticket. Appointments can be made outside the traditional opening hours – all you need to do is make a call and initiate the arrangement.
