The biggest bunker in the North of France

You will find out that it’s not all roses and flowers when you decide to explore the off-beat destinations around Europe in general, as well as around France in particular. The Bunker of Éperlecques (which locals call Blockhaus d’Éperlecques) is an excellent place to begin your journey if you’re feeling a bit dark lately.

A brief history of The Bunker of Éperlecques

Shortly – this is a bunker that dates back to the Second World War. Nazi Germany built it and gave it the codename Powerplant Northwest (Kraftwerk Nord West). It was meant to launch over thirty ballistic missiles from the German V-weapons program every day.

Fortunately, the deadly facility was never successfully put into practice, thanks to the continuous efforts of the British and the American air forces that did everything to keep it down and prevent the launching of ballistic weapons. Powerplant Northwest was, therefore, used for different purposes throughout the years, including liquid oxygen production factory.

The bunker has been open to the general public since 1973 and was listed as an “Ancient Memorials” more than a decade later – in 1985. Now, here is everything you need to know about visiting the place.
