Fort Du Saint Eynard is one of the seven forts constituting the so-called fortified belt of Grenoble. The militaristic fort is lodged in a set of breathtaking natural surroundings and offers a spectacular 360 ° view around the Belledonne massif, the Grésivaudan valley, and the city of Grenoble.

Fort Du Saint Eynard – Location and getting there

As a natural setting, Fort Du Saint Eynard is positioned at the top of Mont Saint-Eynard, part of the Chartreuse massif. As far as civilization is concerned, the fort is located south-southwest of the town of Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse.

When approaching the site from Grenoble, take the D512 towards Col de Porte. At the entrance to Sappey, turn right towards the Fort and keep on driving through the 3km-long forest road. The bad news is – that road is closed during the winter season.

Fort Du Saint Eynard – Brief history of the place

The Fort Du Saint Eynard was built in the second half of the 1870s, as a part of the defense system guarding the Chartreuse massif and the surrounding villages. The fortification was thoroughly rehabilitated at the beginning of the 1990s and is nowadays open to the general public.

The fort extends over more than 274,410 square meters, divided into four different buildings and two courtyards. They are all located in an isolated mountain area with a majestic view, and therefore attract tourists from all over the world with their vibrant history and mind-blowing beauty.

Planning your visit to Fort Du Saint Eynard

When outlining your visit, you should keep in mind a few essentials, including:

  • The area is open to the public from the beginning of May to the end of October, with varying working hours that you should check in advance.
  • The nearest parking stands 100 meters away from the fort. The site is accessible from the parking for people with reduced mobility.
  • Pets are not allowed into the fort or the surrounding area.
  • Access to the site is free of charge for everyone.
  • Groups are welcome, children and teenagers, including.
