The mystical rock castle, or Dragonstone

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a small yet amazingly picturesque islet, located in the Bermeo municipality in Basque Country, Spain. Its name literally translates as “the rock castle,” and there is a good reason for that. Nature, mystics, and imagination blend to form the ultimate travel experience, which we’re going to tell you more about in the following paragraphs.

How can you reach it?

This impressive natural site is reachable by a man-made stone bridge, consisting of around 240 zig-zagged steps. They stretch from the mainland to the ultimate destination – a church dedicated to John the Baptist, that dates back to the Early Middle Ages and proudly stands just on top of the rocky island. The hike goes for about a kilometer and is manageable for the general public, as long as they are prepared with comfortable shoes, the time to take it easy, and the eagerness to enjoy the stunning view.

What will you find there?

First and foremost, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking landscape every step of the way. The place is a widely-known photographer hot spot, thanks to its natural epicness and its underlined mystical character.

By the end of the uphill walk, you will reach a 9th century stone hermitage with a bell on its entrance. There is an old local legend that says that if you ring the church bell three times and then make a wish, it will sooner or later come true.

Some visitors may recognize the location as Dragonstone from the seventh season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” series. Gaztelugatxe was used as a filming location for some of the scenes, yet do not be disappointed when you eventually find out that the castle on the top of the islet was digitally created later.
