A towering fortress, a breathtaking viewpoint, a compilation of natural phenomena, and an authentic European vitality. No, these are not four different trips to take. This is going to be just a fraction of your adventure when visiting the Grenoble Bastille and the Mandrin Caves in France.

Location and getting there

The Grenoble Bastille and the Mandrin Caves can be found at the southern border of the Chartreuse mountain range, topping the famous city of Grenoble in France. The fortification is towering 476 m above sea level and offers a mesmerizing view that draws over half a million visitors per year.

The Bastille of Grenoble is reachable by both a fully-functional cable car and a private vehicle. Car drivers are welcome to park at Parking Philippeville and Parking du Musée, or drive right up to the Bastille and use the free parking at the summit.

With many lifts, walkways, and specially installed surfaces, the Bastille is ready to welcome people with reduced mobility in about 40% of its sections.

About the Grenoble Bastille and its surroundings

The exceptionally well-preserved Grenoble Bastille is a military building constructed between 1823 and 1848. The history and memoirs of the place can be experienced through numerous information boards, on-site guided tours, events, and five different museums.

The Bastille Art Centre enables visitors to observe contemporary art exhibitions. At the same time, the Museum of Mountain Troops presents additional information and artifact collection from the life of the extraordinary army corps, instituted in 1888.

The space encompassing the Grenoble Bastille blends an authentic historical vibe with a distinct naturalist area – home for over 200 Alpine and Mediterranean wildlife species.

The Mandrin Caves

An underground section that leads from the entry to the fort gives visitors access to the Mandrin Caves. The caves lead to an opening at the opposite end of the glacis, providing a brand-new perspective on the fort’s defensive system and its remarkable range.

Going there and back again takes no more than 30 minutes and is positively worth it.

The site is particularly welcoming and offers tourists the chance to enjoy different live events, a snack bar, a few restaurants, and a fine souvenir shop.
