Vedettes Sirènes

Morgat sea caves are situated in the bay of Douarnenez near the village of Morgat in the town of Crozon in Finistère in France.

The science behind the Morgat Caves

Visitors have been coming to the Morgat Sea Caves for almost 170 years now. There is an interesting scientifical explanation behind the creation of these caves. The famous Red and Pink patterns of the caves is the result of algae and iron oxide. Erosion creates cracks on the rock, and these cracks with the pressure of the water from the waves squeezing through them form caves.

These caves have become famous because of the remarks made by its visitors. One particular observation made by Gustave Flaubert in 1847 is “the boat was travelling at the oar, felt driven towards a pearly, strange kingdom, as in a magic corridor”.

Not One but Four Caves

You’d think such a fascinating natural phenomenon would have created one magnificent cave, but no, I suppose you might be wrong. Nature has been far more generous than that and gifted us with four amazing caves.

The Grotte de L’Autel (Cave of the Altar)

This cave is the biggest one of them all. It is 80m long, cathedral looking den with Red and Pink colouring from the algae and iron oxide. A. Marteville and P. Varin who visited these caves in a843 said “If we are to believe tradition, this cave was once the meeting place for the faithful at times. persecution, and it is since the rock placed in the middle kept the name of “altar.”

The Grotte Sainte-Marine (Cave of Saint Margaret the Virgin)

This cave is named after the Sainte Marine (Margaret the Virgin aka Margaret of Antioch who was the daughter of a pagan priest named Aedesius in Turkey around 300 AD. She was of Christian faith, and when Olybrius, the Governor of the Roman Diocese of the East offered her marriage, she refused because she did not want to turn her back to her beliefs. It is said that she was then tortured and that several miraculous incidents happened during the brutal acts.

Cheminee Du Diable (Devil’s Chimney)

It is aparently named because when the daylight enters this particular cave, it gives a special aura to it.

Chambre du Diable (House of the Devil)

This cave is completely dark, which is why it is called this name.

Sainte Marine cave is the only one reachable by foot. All other caves can be accessed by boat depending on the tides.

Vedettes Sirènes and the Tour to Morgat Sea Caves

The tour to the Morgat Caves arranged by Vedettes Sirènes is definitely worth your time and money. Local fishers initially organised the trips to the caves. In 1933 Victor Drévillon and his father François started taking the explorers onboard the Jean Mermoz. After many years of running these tours, they are now experts on the subject providing well-detailed commentary during the trips, about its geology and ecosystems and telling stories about Morgat that have been handed down through folk tradition.
