Where history, art, and magic intertwine

Château de Pierrefonds, or the Pierrefonds Castle, is unquestionably one of the most spectacular things to witness when in France. It is also one that you can speak about for hours, so we did our best to assemble the most vital tourist information that you might need before your visit.

History and location

The Pierrefonds Castle is located in the French commune of Pierrefonds, about 80 km away from Paris. Its geographical situation on the side of the Compiègne Forest perfectly correlates with its impressive architecture and turns it into a truly enchanting place to find yourself in.

The castle was initially built back in the Middle Ages, sometime around the 12th century. At the end of the 14th century, King Charles VI gave it to his brother – Louis, the Duke of Orléans – who reassembled it and resided there until the end of his life. Unfortunately, the Medieval version of The Pierrefonds Castle was almost completely demolished during the 17th century. It remained no more than a beautiful ruin until Napoleon III decided to reconstruct it once again and adopt it as his imperial residence.

Touring the Pierrefonds Castle

The visits usually last about an hour and take you along several parts of the castle, including the chapel, the ceremonial room, the dungeon,  and the covered way.
