Puy de Dôme is one of the youngest volcanoes in the Chaîne des Puys region of the French Massif Central. This string of volcanoes includes many cinder cones and lava domes formed almost 11,000 years ago.

Puy de Dôme hiking trails 

The Puy de Dôme summit offers impressive panoramic views over the Chaîne des Puys and the Clermont-Ferrand commune. That’s why thousands of tourists are hiking its trails every year, enjoying the vibes of the wild.

Two different trails are leading to the Puy de Dôme summit:

  • Тhe Chemin Chèvres, or The Northern Path. It is about 5 km long, takes approximately 3 hours, and provides plenty of stunning views of the Puy Pariou, the Puy de Côme, and the Puy des Goules.
  • The Chemin de Muletiers, or the Southern Path. This steep path is about 4 km long, takes approximately 2 hours, and was once an old Roman road. 

Once you reach the summit, you can experience three separate walking paths: Curious, Conquerors, and Little Explorers. There are also restaurants, shops, and a well-equipped visitor center giving information on the area’s history and geology.

Panoramique des Dômes railway

Since May 2012, tourists can also travel up the mountain summit by taking a unique rack railway – The Panoramique des Dômes. 

This small electric train will take you all the way up to the peak of the volcano in no more than 15 minutes of a laidback and effortless ride. 

Anyway, these 15 minutes will be packed with breathtaking scenic views and a 360 ° panorama of Auvergne’s volcanoes.

Puy de Dôme: sports and thrill

Puy de Dôme is also a superb location for sports lovers, adventures, and thrill-seekers. Its landscape and natural specifics happen to be more than ideal for different individual and group activities, such as:

  • Flying a paraglider, a hot-air balloon, or a small airplane;
  • Cycling and motorsports;
  • Sightseeing and photography;
  • Hiking, strolling around, and exploring the view.

And do you know which is the best part about it? At some points, nature blends with culture super finely and unexpectedly.

Puy de Dôme cultural and educational sightseeing 

While touring Puy de Dôme, you will also encounter some cultural artifacts and remains that are definitely worth your attention.

Among them is the former Roman road, accessible by taking the Chemin de Muletiers, or the Southern Path that leads to the summit. 

You can also outline a brief pause to explore the Temple of Mercury museum and the Clermont Observatory of Terrestrial Physics located right beside it. They can be found at the very summit of Puy de Dôme – the final destination of your journey. 

In the observatory, some workshops and group visits can be arranged upon request, which follows and explain our climate’s past and ongoing evolution.
