Lac de Monteynard-Avignonet, widely known as the Lake of Drac, is a human-made water reservoir. Its principal purpose is to serve the demands of a power station owned by a French electric utility company, and yet there is a lot more to the place.

Drac Lake and Dam – getting there

Essentially, Drac is a tributary of the French Isère river, running through the department of Isère. A magnificent bridge crosses its watercourse just on the side of the Monteynard-Avignonet Lake.

The lake is located about 25 kilometers south of Grenoble, and about 10 kilometers from La Mure. It is bordered by a vast number of municipalities, including Avignonet, Mayres-Savel, La Motte-Saint-Martin, Treffort, and others. It is a subject to local inter-municipal cooperation responsible for the tourist development of the area. The lake is therefore approachable by all directions, making it a prominent destination for off-beat European tourism.

Physical characteristics of the lake and its surroundings

Lac de Monteynard-Avignonet is positioned about 500 meters above sea level and is surrounded by two magnificent canyons – the Drac and the Ebron canyon, respectively. Physically, it serves as a boundary between a couple of vast natural valleys and is easily observable from the route of the little train from La Mure.

The lake spreads over 10 km in length and has a medium width of 300 meters. In the lowest point, its waters reach a depth of 115 meters. The lake is bordered by majestic vertical rocks and a giant dam, making it a spectacle worth experiencing.

What is there to do around?

Put shortly – there is a lot to do when around the Drac Lake. Except for the undeniable sunbathing, picnicking, and swimming opportunities, the lake offers a windy and wavy climate, making it one of the most fabulous places for windsurfing and kitesurfing around Europe.

Visitors are also welcome to go fishing, join the specially organized cruises, or go for a wild hike.
