Troglodyte site

The Auvergne region of France is rich in natural and historical gems that attract thousands of visitors from all over the globe.

Among our absolute favourites, we have this one: an extended troglodyte habitat, carved entirely by the hand of man right into a massive volcanic cliff. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the one-in-a-million Jonas Caves and Troglodyte site!

Origins of the Jonas Caves and Troglodyte site

Grottes de Jonas, as referred to by the locals, originally came into existence after an eruption of the Jonas volcano. Later on, all the grottoes of the site were excavated by men and meant to serve as a shelter and a home.

The first ones who began the caves’ digging were the Celts, who engaged in that uneasy endeavor as back as 400 BC. Their accomplishments were then advanced through Medieval times and up to the 13th century.

The final result? Nowadays, you can explore over 70 different cliff-carved rooms, placed over five floors that used to accommodate over 600 people at once: villagers, animals, priests, warriors, and peasants.
