The Duino Castle can be found in the municipality of Duino-Aurisina, located in the Trieste province of Italy.

After centuries of rich and dynamic history, the Castle and its lush surroundings were opened to the general public as soon as the middle of 2003. But what happened before that, and what kind of place is the Duino castle really? We can’t wait to tell you all about it.

The history of the Duino Castle

The site’s history originated back in the 11th century when the first Old Castle was constructed on the spot – it belonged to Aquileia’s patriarchate and is nowadays located near the Duino Castle itself.

Later on, at the end of the 14th century, the Duino Castle was erected to replace the prior Roman building, under the command of Ugone di Duino, captain of Trieste.

Different noble families acquired the brand-new Duino Castle throughout its history until it finally became a property of the Della Torre family at the end of the 16th century. In the decades and centuries to come, the Duino Castle developed to become a prominent privately-owned cultural and humanistic center – a characteristic that is still alive today.

Among the prestigious guests of the castle, some were Elizabeth of Austria, Johann Strauss, Franz Liszt, Paul Valery, and finally, the most celebrated of all, the Austrian Bohemian poet Rainer Maria Rilke – author of the famous “Duino Elegies,” inspired by a stay at the Castle. Intrigued about that? Let us dig a bit deeper into that story.

The Duino Elegies

The first two of Rilke’s Duino Elegies were conceived and initially composed during his stay at the Castle, as a guest of Princess Marie Thurn und Taxis in 1912. Rilke later dedicated his work to the noblewoman, who was known to be one of his most devoted supporters and closest friends.

While strolling alongside the rocks near the Castle that overlooked the Adriatic Sea, Rilke claimed to hear a voice that spoke the words of the first line: “Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the hierarchies of angels?”

The Duino Elegies were later recognized as one of Rilke’s most influential works that speak of mystics, beauty, and existential dread. And for the generations, that remained a history of how beauty inspired beauty – because people go, but their traces still remain.
