Magnificent Luxembourg for history lovers

Have you been planning to pay an adventurous visit to Luxembourg lately? You are not alone: Luxembourg has a lot to offer for everyone. Because here is where divine nature, vibrant history, and excellent tourist servicing blend together to create the ultimate travel experience.

Today, we tell you a bit more about one of the country’s finest locations to mark as a must-see: The Vianden Castle. Welcome on board, and let’s travel together – in Pink.

Vianden Castle location and surroundings

The castle is located in Vianden: a commune in the Oesling region of north-eastern Luxembourg. It is actually one of the overall twelve communes that have the status of a separate town within the country.

Vianden is widely appreciated for its valuable historical monuments, making it one of Luxembourg’s most prominent tourist centres. Along with the Church of the Trinitarians, the Cross of Justice, and the Church of St Nicholas, the place has one central sightseeing destination that builds up the area’s epic atmosphere: the Vianden Castle.

It stands about 300 metres above the town, providing a bird’s eye view over Vianden and the river Our.

Vianden Castle history and features

The Vianden Castle, known among the locals as Buerg Veianen, is one of the largest and most impressive fortified buildings west of the Rhine river. What’s more – back in 2019, it was officially listed by CNN to be one of the 21 most beautiful castles in the whole world.

The feudal residence foundations were established on what’s known to have been an ancient Roman fortlet and later a Carolingian refuge. Anyway, the first Count of Vianden was first historically mentioned at the end of the 11th century, and the Vianden Castle was fully completed later in the 14th century. That’s right – its construction lasted for three entire centuries!

Its architecture is a unique blend of Romanesque and Gothic elements, enriched with Renaissance structures added later in the 17th century. The main building and its surroundings have a total length of 90 metres: 90 meters of beauty, splendor, and excellence that are currently yours to explore.

Planning your visit to the Vianden Castle

Chateau Vianden has been subject to extensive restoration work to become what it is today: one of Europe’s finest places to visit.

The entrance area will welcome you with a modern and interactive visitor centre. After that, you will be offered to choose between a professionally guided tour or an automatic audio guide to take you through the marvels of the building.

Touring the castle is suitable for family and group visits, individuals, children, and seniors alike. It is offered in local and international languages such as French, English, German, and Luxembourgish.

The time you will need to see every corner of the Vianden Castle varies between 90 and 120 minutes, during which you will enjoy plenty of historical artifacts, brilliant architecture, and fantastic sightseeing bits from above the town.
